Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has hinted that some senior players might exit the team in the summer as he looks to next season.
Ferguson has not completely given up on landing a fourth consecutive Premier League title.
However, the Scot does accept his side are in need of improbable assistance from neighbours Wigan and the situation looks “bleak”.
Yet even if United somehow overturn the odds and become the first team to win four consecutive championships, Ferguson feels changes in personnel are inevitable.
“You have to take a decision about where we can improve the team,” Ferguson told MUTV.

Sir Alex Ferguson admits that the advantage lies with Chelsea, but insists that Manchester United still have ‘a great chance’ of retaining the Premier League title despite Wayne Rooney not being fit for the Blackburn Rovers game.
As Carlo Ancelotti’s men are on FA Cup semi-final duty at Wembley on Saturday, United will return to the top of the table if they can end a desperate week by beating Blackburn at Ewood Park on Sunday.
They must try and do so without Wayne Rooney, who has been ruled out by the ankle injury he aggravated against Bayern Munich in midweek, and with confidence on the floor following their away-goals exit in the Champions League.
That setback came just four days after the home defeat by Chelsea which saw the Red Devils surrender pole position and leave them outsiders to clinch an unprecedented fourth successive title.

Carlo Ancelotti and Sir Alex Ferguson both installed Chelsea as favourites to win the Premiership title after a 2-1 win at Manchester United sent the Londoners two points clear with five games left to play.
“Chelsea are definitely favourites now, there is no question about that,” United boss Ferguson acknowledged. “Two points clear with five games left, it’s a great position for them to be in.”
Ancelotti echoed the United manager’s comments. “Now we are the favourites, yes. That’s normal when we are back at the top of the league.
“But nothing is decided. We have to stay composed, quiet and maintain focus in our game.”

Sir Alex Ferguson believes his Manchester United team are well on their way to the knockout stages of the Champions League with their win over CSKA Moscow last night.
United maintained their 100% record in Group B after Antonio Valencia struck a late goal to secure a 1-0 win in the Russian capital on Wednesday night.
With three games still remaining, Ferguson hopes his side can now secure their passage with something to spare.
Ferguson said: “We are very pleased with our performance.
“The situation in the group is now nine points. I have always maintained that you need 10 to qualify.
“We now have a home game against CSKA in two or three weeks’ time which we hope can take us to the next stage.”

The Football Association have asked Sir Alex Ferguson to explain his comments about 49 year-old referee Alan Wiley following Manchester United‘s 2 – 2 draw against Sunderland at Old Trafford on Saturday.
Having looked at the remarks, the FA have now requested that the Scot explains the reasons behind his outburst.
However, no further action will be taken against Blackburn manager Sam Allardyce who criticised Peter Walton for not giving Rovers a penalty in their 6-2 defeat at Arsenal.
Ferguson’s comments have been criticised by Alan Leighton, national secretary of professionals’ union Prospect – who represent referees.
“My main concern is about the unfounded and totally unwarranted remarks about Alan Wiley’s fitness,” he said.

Sir Alex Ferguson has stated that he will ‘trust’ the players currently at his disposal at Manchester United and not make any late signings before the transfer window slams shut.
Although it seems as if that faith was shaken by United’s defeat at Burnley two weeks ago, Ferguson is adamant that he does not need to spend the money remaining from the £80m sale of Cristiano Ronaldo to Real Madrid.
“After the Burnley game, I examined our commitment, but after analysing our failings, I didn’t think we were lacking in that area,” Ferguson told The Independent. “I must always guard against complacency. Some players can drive themselves on while others are happy to settle for an easy life, but Manchester United cannot afford that kind of player

Sir Alex Ferguson have snapped up Bordeaux talent Gabriel Obertan on a four-year contract, Manchester United announced on Wednesday.
Obertan, 20, who can play in several attacking positions, is United’s third signing of the summer and had been tracked by Ferguson for some time.
“Gabriel is a player we have tracked for a few years now, but because of his educational programme our efforts to get him here have always been delayed,” Ferguson told the club’s website.
“We are delighted to get him now as he is an exciting prospect.
We like to get young players and develop them, and we will see that in Gabriel over the next two years.”
“I am very happy to join Manchester United,” Paris-born Obertan said.
